Tom "Durrrr" Dwan may be the symbol of the fact that today's poker is completely different from what it used to be. He's an online poker hero that now plays million dollar worth pots all over the world. And he is not even 30 years old yet.
A youngster from New Jersey who now is known as one of the craziest poker players on earth. And even though to some he might seem reckless – he is far from that. He is a math genius with incredible poker reading skills and lots of determination to work on his game. But even he admits that he is a bit of a bluff junkie. Tom Dwan just really loves to bluff! An the bigger the stakes, the better. One of the clearest examples of that is his half a million dollars bluff with 72 offsuit in hand. Even after announcing what his Hole cards after being dealt.
Tom Dwan was born in 1986 in New Jersey and entered the world of poker just as it went boom – in 2004 when online poker really became a huge success. His father on 17th birthday gave him a $50 which Tom Dwan decided to spend to deposit at Paradise Poker. He had attended Boston University but like often we hear with poker players – he eventually did drop out to pursue his poker career. Luckily, he was one of a few that actually found his true calling.
When Dwan deposited his first $50 he decided to choose a nickname Durrrr because he thought other player would tilt after losing to a player called 'durrrr'. And the nickname had stuck. He started out with $6 SNG and almost lost it all. But before he knew it he was back up again when he switched to cash games where he is an expert now.
Tom 'Durrrr' Dwan is not known as a poker tournament player in a sense that even with millions in his account, he is still to win any of the major tournaments. But he has finished is some spectacular final tables. Still, Dwan is not a tournament player. 'Durrrr' is a cash player. It seems as if he was born to become one. Even he admits that he was never a tournament player.
Even though his tournament winnings exceed just over $1 million, the bigger part of his bankroll is built from cash games rather than tournaments. As a high stakes cash game player now he regularly travels to Macau to play against a variety of Chinese businessmen and most of the pots reach hundreds of thousands and even millions. As Dwan says, his largest pot won in these games was $3.8 million after flopping a higher two-pair than his opponent's. Such is crazy dynamic of Tom Dwan's poker: lose $5 million to Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom (read more below), win a few million in high stakes cash games in Macau.
Even though he is a cash game player, Tom 'Durrrr' Dwan has a few significant wins in tournaments as well. He has not won neither WSOP nor WPT or EPT event but he has played in many final tables and made it as high as 2nd place so it is just a matter of time until we will see Dwan take home a WSOP Bracelet or a winners' trophy from WPT or EPT.
Tom Dwan is still very young so his biggest tournament wins no doubt are still ahead of him but his account already has filled up with impressive ups and downs. When nobody still knew who is Isildur1 he challenged Dwan to play Heads up games, six tables at a time with about $150.000 on each. In a week, these two youngsters have made online poker history as the biggest cash challenge. In a week Dwan lost about $5 million to the player from Sweden.
However his famous trips to Macau with other poker pros have brought him many millions in profits. Although, not often does Dwan reveal how much did he win but rumor has it that after one of his trips he brought home over $10 million in profits!
