  • No less than an astounding personality is Guy Laliberté. It is not only poker he has contributed a lot in to. He is a Canadian that once started out as a fire-eater, later established a world-known Cirque du Soleil. Later he was awarded as the Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006 by Ernst & Young, a space tourist and philanthropist. Above all that he plays poker and does it brilliantly.

    Story of Guy Laliberté

    Born in Quebec, 1959 Laliberté was fascinated by circus. He started earning his dollars at the street as an accordion player, stilt-walker, fire-eater. Being 25, in 1984 he gathered a small group of colleagues and stated off possibly the best know circus at the moment – Cirque du Soleil. Now the Circus generates over $800 million every year which is makes a large part of what Guy Laliberté on estimate has 2.6 billion.

    Laliberté has started playing poker in more in mid-2000s and has been playing in quite a few big poker tournaments, TV shows such as High Stakes Poker and World Series of Poker which he has cashed in once. But Guy Laliberté is known in poker world more for philanthropy than for his plays at the felt. He is the founder of One Drop Foundation that helps fight poverty around the world.

    The Big One for One Drop in 43rd annual World Series of Poker had $1 million as a buy-in with a large part going to charity. The tournament was entered by 48 famous individuals where in the end Antonio Esfandiari claimed 1st place prize – over $18 million while over $5.3 million went to the One Drop Foundation. In fact, this was the only WSOP tournament that Laliberté has finished in the money (5th place brought him over $1.8 million)

    Poker Finishes

    We already mentioned his big win in the WSOP (which is his only WSOP money finish), but he has also played lots of high stakes tournaments. However, the profit list from poker is not that long:

    • In April, 2007 Laliberté finished 4th in World Poker Tour Season Five event in Belaggio, Las Vegas. He took home $696,220.
    • 43rd WSOP in 2012, Event #55 Big One For One Drop, 5th place brought him $1,834,666 prize.

    Interesting facts:

    • In 2004 added by Times to the Top 100 Most Influential People in the World.
    • In 2004 received the Order of Canada, the highest award of the country.
    • In 2009 Guy Laliberté participated in a mission to space and became the first Canadian space tourist. The mission was dedicated to raise awareness on areas where people lack fresh water. After the mission, Laliberté wrote a book 'Gaia' and dedicated all profits to the charity.
