Selbst and Hellmuth at WSOP and Matusow's movie

  • Whether you like Hellmuth or not, no one can deny that when it comes to tournaments, he does get the job done. Also, Mike Matusow is discussing creating a poker movie that will blow your mind!

  • As WSOP action continues, there is another big batch of stories from this week. Vanessa Selbst not only made a deep run, but won her 3rd WSOP bracelet! Phil Hellmuth gave an amazing performance in the $1,500 Razz event. And so much more.

Phil Hellmuth’s 14th WSOP bracelet journey continues

So close, yet so far. This is probably how one of poker’s “Big Phil’s” felt after the fight was over. As you probably already know, Phil Hellmuth made a deep run in $1,500 Razz Event and in the final stage of the tournament, faced Ted Forrest for the title.

Even with 13 gold WSOP bracelets Hellmuth knew it’s going to be a fierce fight against 5-time bracelet winner. For the most part both had similar stacks so the chip lead changed 12 times during the play. But that was only until two hands that crippled Hellmuth. After Hellmuth was left with only 45,000 chips against over a million sitting next to his opponent, Hellmuth needed a miracle to survive.

Whether you like Hellmuth or not, no one can deny that when it comes to tournaments, he does get the job done. And it’s probably only a matter of events until he collects his 14th gold WSOP bracelet.

Nicolas Cage in a poker movie

What does Mike Matusow and Nicolas Cage have in common? From the looks of it, not much really. However, there is some exciting rumors going around.

You may remember that in 2009 Mike “The Mouth” Matusow released a poker book called “Check Raising the Devil”. It’s his biography about fighting depression and drugs as well as his joys of winning 3 WSOP gold bracelets.

As Pokernews.com has described it in 2009:

Matusow’s story is a sometimes jubilant, sometimes harrowing tale, punctuated throughout by remarkable successes and equally remarkable failures. Indeed, the swings of professional poker — the highs and lows of which, in and of themselves, can make even the most balanced individual’s head spin — serve as a mere baseline upon which the even greater climaxes and depressions of Matusow’s life have been built.

Now, if you’re thinking it could make a good movie, you’re right on the spot. Talks have been made public that Matusow has been talking with Nicolas Cage to take the lead role in the movie.

Seriously, this has to be huge!

First of all, now 4-time bracelet winner’s story is fantastic. Maybe he’s not the nicest person to have at the poker table (thus, the nickname “The Mouth”) but he would make a great character in a movie even portrayed as he really is.

Second, Nicolas Cage is one of the biggest Hollywood stars. Him being in the movie would attract a lot of media attention and attract tons of people that don’t now poker.

The story about overcoming your personal demons and reaching success may also resonate with a lot of people and inspire.

Overall, if any of these rumors are true, it’s great news for poker. However, no exact details about the movie or Nicolas Cage being in it haven’t yet made the media.
